SALT LAKE CITY –
Shelbee Jones allowed just two earned runs across 6 1/3 innings, but the University of Utah softball team was defeated by the Arizona State Sun Devils, 3-2, on Saturday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Utah drops to 12-29 overall and 4-10 in the Big 12.
The Sun Devils struck first thanks to an opening-inning RBI double by Ashleigh Mejia and they added another in the third on a sacrifice fly courtesy of Kelsey Hall.
The Utes staged their first rally of the day in the bottom of the third and they were able tie the score.
Hailee White and
Shelbi Ortiz reached on infield hits and a
Kaylah Nelsen sacrifice moved both runners into scoring position.
Kennedy Proctor then drew Utah level by rapping a two-run single through the middle.
After a scoreless fourth, ASU re-took the lead with one run in the fifth. Utah spent the rest of the day threatening to even the score, putting runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth and loading the bases with two outs in the seventh, but the clutch hit the Utes needed didn't materialize.
