KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 6 seeded Utah women's basketball team fell to No. 14 seeded Texas Tech 75-64 in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament Thursday night.
Utah allowed Texas Tech an 11-point advantage in the second quarter that the Utes couldn't recover from in the second half. Utah was led by Gianna Kneepkens' 23 points, six assists and six rebounds. Mayé Touré also posted double figures with 10 points.
GAME SUMMARY
Utah started the game hitting back-to-back three pointers, one by Gianna Kneepkens and one from Jenna Johnson. The Utes defense locked in and held the Lady Raiders to a four minute scoring drought. Utah closed out the initial quarter of play with a 13-10 lead over Texas Tech.
Texas Tech went on to outscore Utah 21-10 in the second quarter to push out for a 31-23 lead going into the halftime break.
Utah made a surge early in the third quarter to cut the score deficit to just five but Texas Tech came up with a quick 8-0 run to push out for a 43-30 lead. Utah ended the third quarter on a 10-3 run to trail 48-42 going into the fourth quarter.
The Utes could never recover in the fourth and battled it out until the final buzzer where the No. 14 seeded Texas Tech ran away with the 75-64 victory over the Utes.
LEADERS
Utah had two Utes score in double figures and were led by Gianna Kneepkens' 23 points, six rebounds and six assists. Mayé Touré also posted double digit scoring with 10 points. Touré added five rebounds to Utah's total.
COMPARISON
Utah shot 39.3% from the field while TTU shot 48.9% from the field. Utah went 28.6% from deep making 8-of-28 while Texas Tech went 50.0% shooting 10-of-20. The Utes went 12-of-17 from the free throw line for 70.6% while the Lady Raiders went 19-of-22 for 86.4%.
Utah had 14 assists on 22 made field goals while TTU had 17 assists on 23 made field goals. The Lady Raiders outrebounded the Utes 33-24.
