COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 8 seeded Utah women's basketball team's season came to an end Friday afternoon as the Utes fell to No. 9 seeded Indiana 76-68 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Utah was led by Gianna Kneepkens' 24 points and Mayé Touré's double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Utah ended the season with a 22-9 overall record.
GAME SUMMARY
Mayé Touré started the game hot by scoring all six of Utah's initial points. The Utes and the Hoosiers went on to match each other point-for-point with neither team gaining any momentum shifts. As the first quarter concluded the game was tied at 17-17.
Utah went on a 9-0 run early in the second quarter to push out for a 28-22 lead. Both teams then went on a scoring drought with neither team scoring for over four minutes of the second quarter. Utah's drought ended with a Kennady McQueen layup. The Hoosiers then chipped away at the score and tied it at 31-31 to go into half time.
Indiana found a groove early coming out of the break going on a 9-0 run. The Hoosiers went on to outscore the Utes 27-16 to take a 58-47 at the end of the third quarter.
Utah picked up the tempo in the fourth quarter and started chipping away at the score deficit. The Utes brought the score within four points with one minute remaining in the game but couldn't get any efforts to fall in their favor. Indiana ended up walking away with the 76-68 win over Utah.
LEADERS
Utah had two Utes score in double figures and were led by Gianna Kneepkens' 24 points. Mayé Touré posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Jenna Johnson added four assists to Utah's offensive efforts.
COMPARISON
Utah shot 43.3% from the field while Indiana shot 58.0% from the field. Utah went 28.1% from deep making 7-of-22 while Indiana went 29.4% shooting 5-of-17. The Utes went 7-of-11 from the free throw line for 63.6% while the Hoosiers went 13-of-15 for 86.7%.
Utah had 15 assists on 26 made field goals while Indiana had 19 assists on 29 made field goals. The Utes narrowly outrebounded the Hoosiers 29-28.
