STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 13 University of Utah Men's Golf team closed out the opening round of The Goodwin in third place, using a late push to shoot 4-under through the first 18 holes.
Gabriel Palacios led the Utes on the course, shooting 2-under while ranking tied for ninth.
"Overall good start on another tough day," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "We battled rain and wind most of the day. As a team we got off to a slow start but had a great finish to the round with a number of birdies and an eagle in the final five holes of the day. We tee off for round two in about 12 hours and need to be ready to compete."
Gabriel Palacios opened up the front nine on the right foot, starting with a birdie before rattling off four even marks. The sophomore then recorded a bogey but responded with a birdie on the ensuing hole to move into the back nine 1-under. Palacios tallied five even scores to begin the back nine and drilled consecutive birdies to better his score to 3-under. On the final hole of the course, Palacios hit a bogey to rank tied for ninth and 2-under.
Junior
Brandon Robison got things start with two straight even holes before hitting a bogey on the third hole. With three holes remaining on the front nine, Robison tallied two birdies and a bogey to sit even through the first half. Robison ran into some trouble early across the back nine, recording two bogeys across the first three holes to sit 2-over. Throughout the next four holes, the Utah native hit two birdies, a bogey, and an eagle to finish 1-under and in a tie for 17
th.
Sergio Jimenez recorded a red mark on the second hole but hit two consecutive bogeys two holes later to sit 1-over. Across the final three holes of the first half, Jimenez evened his score with another birdie, but consecutive bogeys moved him to 2-over for the half. Jimenez performed very well in the back nine, hitting three bogeys, two of which came within the last three holes, and six even marks to rank 1-under and in a tie with Robison.
Braxton Watts also started strong, posting a birdie on the opening hole before hitting a double bogey and a bogey two holes later to sit 2-over. The senior bounced back nicely, burying back-to-back birdies to shoot even through the front nine. Watts hit two bogeys and two birdies across the final nine holes to shoot even and in a tie for 30
th overall.
Redshirt junior
Davis Johnson began the tournament like two of his teammates, tallying a birdie on the first hole but leveled out with a bogey two holes later. After three even marks, Johnson drilled another birdie but finished the first half with back-to-back double bogeys to shoot 3-over for the half. Johnson totaled four bogeys in the back half to shoot 7-over and in a tie for 137
th.
