THIS WEEK
The No. 13 Utah Men's Golf team returns to the West Coast to compete in The Goodwin for the third straight season, marking its fourth and final tournament of the month. It's been a sensational spring for the Utes, claiming two first place finishes (John Burns, Schenkel), a second-place finish (Desert Mountain), and a third-place finish (Arizona Thunderbirds) to return inside the Top 10 rankings. It's the fourth time in program history that Utah will take part in The Goodwin, first competing in 2018 before traveling to The Bay for last two seasons. Last season's second-place finish was the team's best performance at the event as Utah missed out on the title by one stroke while
Braxton Watts won his first collegiate individual title.
LAST TIME OUT
In their first-ever participation of the Schenkel Invitational, the Utes exploded during the second and third rounds to win the tournament by just one stroke. It was the fourth tournament title of the season for the Utes, continuing to set a new single-season title record. It was a slow start as Utah shot even in the first round, finding themselves in fourth place and ten strokes out of first place. On day two of the tournament, the Utes elevated their game and shot 11-under while climbing two spots into a tie for second and sitting just one stroke behind the field leader. In a competitive final round, Utah battled it out with No. 11 Florida for the first-place spot. The Utes shined yet again on the course, shooting another 11-under round while edging out Florida by just one stroke. The Utes' two rounds of an11-under 277 marks the lowest rounds of golf by any team in the field.
IN THE RANKS
Utah fell to No. 13 in the latest Scoreboard NCAA rankings, slipping just one spot after being ranked No. 12 last week. The Utes remain as one of three Big 12 programs inside the top 15 alongside No. 3 Arizona State and No. 4 Oklahoma State. In the individual rankings, Jimenez ranks as the No. 27 men's college golfer in the country while
Gabriel Palacios sits at No. 48, jumping ten spots, and
Brandon Robison at No. 64.
THE FIELD
The Utes are one of 30 teams competing for the first-place trophy at The Farm and one of five teams to be ranked inside the top 30. The field consists of host Stanford, Arkansas-Little Rock, BYU, Cal, Cal Poly, Clemson, Colorado, Colorado State, Fresno State, No. 30 Georgia, Howard, Lipscomb, LMU, No. 27 Long Beach State, Loyola-Maryland, Nevada, Northwestern, Oregon, No. 22 Pepperdine, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, SMU, TCU, No. 15 UCLA, UC Davis, Washington, Washington State, and Wofford.
UTAH'S LINE-UP
The Utes will look to same starting lineup as they have all season, continuing to let the hot golfers hit the links. On the scorecard,
Brandon Robison,
Sergio Jimenez,
Braxton Watts,
Davis Johnson, and
Gabriel Palacios will look to keep the momentum rolling.
COACHES THOUGHTS
"Another quick turnaround for us this week," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "This is a big event, and the team is excited to compete. We played well last year at the Goodwin. It was on a different golf course, but I know this group enjoys competing in the Bay Area. I'm looking forward to another great week with the team!"
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The three-day tournament will run from Thursday, March 27 through Saturday, March 30. Every team will complete just one round of golf each day as play begins from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. throughout the weekend. Stanford Golf Course sits right along the edge of campus and stretches 6,742 feet.
