STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 13 University of Utah Men's Golf team slipped to the seventh ranked spot at The Goodwin on Friday, shooting 7-over on the afternoon to sit 3-over for the tournament.
Gabriel Palacios shot even on the day to climb into the top ten.
"We just couldn't get a fourth score today," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "We had three guys play solidly, but didn't have anyone play really good golf. Unfortunately, we had two players really struggle. The day was not a lot different from yesterday, we just didn't quite get the job done today. We have 18 more holes and need to put a great round together to have a chance."
The Utes fell four spots on the team leaderboard after the second round, shooting 7-over after putting together a 4-under performance on Thursday.
Gabriel Palacios,
Sergio Jimenez, and
Davis Johnson both climbed the individual leaderboard as Palacios sits inside the top ten at ninth.
Palacios recorded a bogey on the opening hole of the round but came back with eight consecutive even marks to sit 1-over heading into the front half of the course. The sophomore started the front half with another red mark before hitting a bogey on the following hole. Palacios racked up five straight even marks before adding his second birdie of the day to finish the round 2-under and in a tie for ninth.
Jimenez shot even through the back nine, tallying a bogey on the first and last holes while grabbing a pair of birdies in the middle of the half before moving into the back nine. Jimenez opened the front nine on the right foot, adding a pair of birdies through the first four holes to move 2-under. After another even score, the Spaniard hit two bogeys over the final four holes to shoot even for the round. Jimenez sits tied for 15
th through day two.
Robison started the round off slowly, totaling three bogeys through the first six holes but bettered his score to 2-under with a birdie two holes later. The junior hit another bogey on the 17
th hole, shooting 3-over on the back nine. Robison began the front half of the course with his second red mark of the round but struck a pair of double bogeys within the next four holes. The Utah native finished out the round with four even marks to shoot 7-over for the day and 6-over for the tournament to rank tied for 74
th.
Braxton Watts also tallied three bogeys within the first six holes but bounced back with back-to-back birdies to sit just 1-over. On the final hole of the back nine, Watts recorded a double bogey and finished the back half of the course 3-over. On the second hole of the course, Watts ran into a double bogey before hitting four straight even marks. The senior then drilled a birdie before recording another double bogey on the ensuing hole, shooting 6-over for the round and for the tournament thus far to rank in a tie for 74
th.
Davis Johnson started the round well, posting a birdie to open the back nine but finished with three bogeys and a double bogey across the remaining eight holes to sit 4-over for the back half of the course. On the front half, Johnson buried back-to-back birdies to open the front nine to better his score to 2-over. Two holes later, the redshirt junior tallied another bogey but came back with consecutive red marks two holes later to finish the second round 1-over and 8-over for both rounds. Johnson currently sits in 104
th.

The final round of The Goodwin is set for tomorrow morning at Stanford Golf Course as the Utes will tee off early in the afternoon.
