STATESBORO, Ga. – The No. 12 University of Utah Men's Golf team wrapped up the first round of the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club on Friday as two Utes sit inside the top 20.
"We just made too many mistakes today," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "A lot of golf still remains and hopefully tomorrow we can get ourselves into a good position heading into the final round."
Sergio Jimenez got off to a hot start on the front nine, starting the tournament with a birdie before adding two more across the remaining eight holes to head into the back nine 3-under. The Spain native recorded another red mark two holes into the back nine but tallied three bogeys on the final six holes to finish 1-under and in a tie for 14
th.
Braxton Watts opened up the first round with a birdie on the third hole before hitting seven straights even marks. The senior ran into a bogey on the second hole in the back half but responded with back-to-back birdies, sitting 2-under. Across the final three holes, Watts added two bogeys and a birdie to finish 1-under and in a tie for 14
th with Jimenez.
Gabriel Palacios started the tournament with six even scores and finished the front nine with a birdie and two bogeys on consecutive holes. Once into the back nine, the sophomore hit a bogey and a birdie on back-to-back holes before recording another bogey two holes later. To finish the course, Palacios recorded another bogey but came back with a birdie and an eagle on the final two holes to shoot even.
Brandon Robison had an action-packed opening half of the course, starting with two even marks before hitting a double bogey, two bogeys, and three birdies on consecutive holes to move into the back nine 1-over. The back half consisted of two bogeys and a birdie to rank tied for 40
th and 2-over.
Redshirt junior
Davis Johnson recorded a birdie on the third hole but hit two bogeys on the next three holes to move into the back nine 1-over. In the back nine, Johnson hit a pair of bogeys and a double bogey to shoot 5-over for the first round.
Freshman individual
Rex Wilson began the course on the back nine and shot 6-over but put together a stellar front nine, shooting 2-under.
NEXT UP
The second round of the Schenkel Invitational is scheduled for tomorrow with play starting at 8:30 a.m. MT for the Utes. The final 18 holes will conclude the tournament on Sunday morning.
