THIS WEEK
The No. 12 Utah Men's Golf team makes its quickest turnaround of the season as the Utes travel to Statesboro, Georgia for the Schenkel Invitational. It'll be Utah's first appearance at the tournament as it's in its 45
th edition of the competition, making it the 9
th longest-run division one golf tournament. The last time Utah played in the Peach State was last season at the Invitation at the Ford in Duluth. It's just a three-day turnaround after the conclusion of the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
LAST TIME OUT
The Utes just finished the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, covering Monday and Tuesday. After a slow start, Utah finished in third place behind No. 25 Arizona and Long Beach State while trailing the Wildcats by just three strokes. In five of the seven tournaments this season, the Utes finished in third place or better. On the individual side,
Brandon Robison secured his first collegiate individual crown with a 5-under 211. His play was dictated by the second round as his 5-under created enough separation to take first overall. It's the fourth time this season that the Utes claimed an individual title as Robison joins
Sergio Jimenez (Palouse Collegiate),
Davis Johnson (The Tindall), and
Gabriel Palacios (John Burns Intercollegiate). On a tough course, Robison was just one of seven golfers to finish under par as all 13 teams shot over par for the tournament.
IN THE RANKS
Utah slipped to No. 12 in the latest Scoreboard NCAA rankings this past week, falling two spots. The Utes remain as one of three Big 12 programs inside the top 15 alongside No. 3 Arizona State and No. 5 Oklahoma State. In the individual rankings, Jimenez ranks as the No. 24 men's college golfer in the country. The Spain native is tied for the second-most top 3 finishes in the top 100. In total, two Utes are ranked inside the top 100 as
Gabriel Palacios sits at No. 37, jumping ten spots, and
Brandon Robison at No. 53. Robison's jumped was 51 spots on the individual rankings after his win at the Arizona Intercollegiate.
THE FIELD
The field in Statesboro includes host Georgia Southern, Army, Campbell, No. 11 Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Middle Tennessee, Notre Dame, UAB, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Yale.
UTAH'S LINE-UP
The same five Utes will take to the course as they have all season as
Sergio Jimenez, Gabriel Palacios, Brandon Robison, Davis Johnson, and
Braxton Watts remain on the scorecard while
Rex Wilson is set to compete as an individual.
COACHES THOUGHTS
"The Schenkel has a long history and is a first-class event," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "This is our first time in the tournament, and we are excited to compete. The golf course will be a different grass than we are accustomed to playing out west and it will be good for our team to experience these conditions as we get closer to the post season."
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The tournament stretches across three days as each day covers one round of golf. The Utes will start play at 8:30 a.m. from the first hole of Forest Heights Country Club.
