STATESBORO, Ga. – The No. 12 University of Utah Men's Golf team climbed the leaderboard after the second round of play at the Schenkel Invitational on Saturday, jumping two spots into second place as
Sergio Jimenez is tied for second overall.
"It was really good to put a round together," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "That was a great round in really tough conditions. The wind was blowing out there and the course played challenging. Brandon and Sergio had outstanding rounds, and Braxton was extremely steady all day while Davis shot a really solid 71. It put us into a great position going into tomorrow's final round."
The Utes put together the best round of golf of the entire tournament, posting an 11-under 277 to lead the field. This performance bested the next-best second round by seven strokes.
Jimenez shined during the second round, starting day two with five consecutive even marks before tallying three birdies across the final four holes. To open the back nine, Jimenez recorded a bogey but came back with another birdie two holes later. After another bogey, the sophomore drilled back-to-back birdies on the final two holes to shoot 4-under for the day. Jimenez is currently tied for second and 5-under.
Brandon Robison got his day started with a pair of even scores before hitting a bogey on the third hole and responded with a birdie on the next hole to level out. Three holes later, Robison hit another birdie and followed it up with a pair of even scores to move into the back nine 1-under. Robison turned up his level of play in the back end, hitting two birdies and six even marks before recording an eagle on the last hole of the course to move into a tie for third at 5-under for the day and 3-under for the tournament.
On the front nine,
Braxton Watts ran into trouble early with a bogey on the second hole but bounced back two holes later with a red mark to better his score to even. The senior then rattled off five even marks to head into the back nine even. Watts hit seven eight consecutives even scores once into the back nine and buried a birdie on the final hole to move to 2-under and in a tie for 11
th.
Gabriel Palacios started off slowly, grabbing a pair of bogeys on the first two holes of the round but stabilized with two birdies on the remaining three holes of the front nine to head into the back half even. The sophomore started the back half with a birdie but ran into two bogeys across the next five holes to sit 1-over for the day and the tournament.
Davis Johnson started the day off well, posting three even scores before notching a birdie. Across the remaining five holes of the front nine, Johnson tallied two more birdies and a bogey to move 2-under for the first half of the course. The redshirt junior had a hard time on the opening holes of the back nine, recording a double bogey and two bogeys on the first three holes. Johnson stabilized two holes later as the redshirt junior nailed back-to-back birdies and finished with another red mark on the final hole to rank 1-under for the day and 4-over for the tournament in a tie for 42
nd.
Individual golfer
Rex Wilson opened up with four bogeys and a birdie through the first seven holes before shooting 3-over on the back half to sit 9-over for the two days.
