Mayfield, Sakai smack first collegiate homers in 6-4 defeat
FULLERTON, Calif. – Jolie Mayfield and Sianni Sakai belted the first homers of their collegiate careers, but the University of Utah softball team was defeated by the Weber State Wildcats, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, Calif.
Utah falls to 6-15.
Both teams scored early, starting with a Weber State homer in the top of the first. One half-inning later, the Utes put runners on second and third with two outs and Hailey Deter slapped a single through the middle that plated both runners for a 2-1 lead.
That lead grew to 3-1 in the fourth thanks to Mayfield's round-tripper, but the Wildcats fought back with a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 4-3 edge. Sakai made sure that advantage was short-lived, however, when she send a long fly ball over the left field fence even things at 4-4 the Utes' half of the sixth.
Brooklyn Carreon then entered the circle for Utah and extricated herself from a bases-loaded situation in the top of the seventh, but a two-run clout by Eva Richardson in the eighth thrust Weber State back in front. The Utes put the tying runs on base in their half of the eighth, but they were unable to bring those runners around.

Utah will next pay a visit to Boise, Idaho, where, on Friday, they'll play the Idaho State Bengals at 1 p.m. and the Boise State Broncos at 3:30 p.m.
