SALT LAKE CITY – The fifth-ranked Utah Gymnastics team kick-started the 2025 season, overcoming a slow start through the first two rotations and finding a way to dominate Utah State for the first win of the season with a score of 196.775-194.450.
Before the evening of competition got started, the Red Rocks raised their fourth consecutive Pac-12 Championship banner into the rafters of the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Utah also added another NCAA Final Four banner after taking third place at the 2024 championship meet for a fourth year in a row.
After a slow start by the Red Rocks on the vault, marked by some uncharacteristic mistakes, the anchor of the lineup
Ashley Glynn, scored the first 9.9+ performance of the evening for the Utes, matching her career-high with a 9.925.
"In the locker room, before we came in here, we just talked about, when we see those kinds of mistakes, that really means that our mind isn't in the same place, because those aren't things that we see often," said head coach
Carly Dockendorf. "So for them to come out and do some uncharacteristic things, that means that's where our mind is at, it's not in the right place. I think there's a lot that we can learn from tonight, areas that we can improve mentally, and with our confidence going into next weekend."
"I think it's good to get all those weird little things out,
Grace McCallum said of the Red Rocks' vault performance. "We made a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes, things you don't see in the gym every day. I think it's a good spot to just keep building off of, and just go back in the gym and tune in our mental routines."
After the first rotation, the Red Rocks maintained a slim lead over the Aggies, scoring a 48.925 on vault. Utah State completed its first rotation on bars, coming away with a 48.875.
Moving over to bars, the Red Rocks saw a pair of 9.90 scores flash on the scoreboard, getting a shift in momentum from seniors McCallum and
Amelie Morgan. Morgan achieved the first 9.90 routine of the bars rotation for the Utes, coming up in the fourth spot of the lineup. McCallum kept the energy high to close out the rotation, anchoring the Utah lineup with a second score of 9.90.
Through two rotations, Utah held a lead of 98.300-97.200 over the Aggies, aided by a score of 49.375 on bars, while Utah State tallied a 48.325 on vault.
In the third rotation,
Camie Winger dazzled the Huntsman crowd, scoring a career-high 9.950 on the beam.
Makenna Smith kept the momentum going as the Utes proved why they are one of the best beam teams in the nation, following up with a 9.900. McCallum capped off the rotation with her second 9.900 score of the evening, anchoring the beam squad.
"I think tonight for me, it was the little girl inside of me that was really proud, just because growing up, I always watched Utah's beam and that's always something that I wanted to do--and not just do, but do very well--and tonight just showed that for me," said Winger, who hails from Orem, Utah, after her career-high beam performance.
The Red Rocks found a groove on what has traditionally been their best event, scoring a 49.475 on beam, while the Aggies scored a 48.400 on floor. Utah led Utah State by over two points heading into the final rotation, 147.775-145.600.
The Red Rocks utilized their depth on floor, making a late substitution to the lineup and bringing in junior
Sarah Krump for her first non-exhibition performance, in place of
Ella Zirbes. Krump tallied the second-highest score of the rotation for the Utes, securing a 9.825.
When speaking about Krump's performance, McCallum said, "She is our number one supporter, always rooting for us. So I was happy to see her have her moment to shine up there, and us have her back while she was out on the floor doing her thing. And she did it beautifully, and I couldn't be more proud, it almost brought me to tears."
The Utes closed out the evening scoring a 49.000 on floor, while the Aggies ended the night with a 48.750 on beam.
