WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — The fourth-ranked Red Rocks earned Utah Athletics their
second conference championship as members of the Big 12 Conference after walking away the regular season champions a month earlier.
Utah persisted against the rest of their conference mates earning a 197.775 final score and the Big 12 Title, while
Grace McCallum and Avery Neff earned No. 1 and No. 2 in the all-around, and Big 12 end of year awards. The Red Rocks also swept the Big 12 individual champion awards, placing at least one athlete first in every event.
"Overall, really excited for the team tonight," said head coach
Carly Dockendorf. "Our first Big 12 Championships that we were a part of, and we came here to win, and I felt like we executed that really well. I think our vault—it just keeps getting better week after week. Our vaults were huge today, and the girls are doing a really good job of dialing in on their landings, and cleaning up some of those little deductions we'd been giving away."
The Red Rocks got off to a solid start against their Big 12 opponents posting a team score of 49.325 to take the lead after the first rotation with Arizona in second (49.175), ASU in third (49.000), and Denver in fourth (48.900).
Ella Zirbes got Utah going with a 9.85 and
Grace McCallum followed it up tying her season-best of 9.90.
Avery Neff kept things going with a 9.825,
Ashley Glynn posted another 9.90 for the Red Rocks, and
Makenna Smith wrapped up the rotation with a 9.85.
Utah continued on, scoring a 49.375 on bars to keep a strong lead after two rotations (98.700). Arizona remained in second (98.300), Denver moved up to third (98.025), and ASU coming in fourth (97.825).
Smith got the high-score as the lead-off with a 9.925. Morgan and Zirbes put up a pair of 9.875s, while Glynn and Neff had 9.85s. McCallum rounded out bars for the Red Rocks with a 9.825.
"Bars has been such a strong event for us, and I thought we did a really nice job," said Dockendorf. "We gave away some tenths on the landings for sure that I know we will want to clean up for regionals and nationals."
The Red Rocks tied their season-high on beam set last week against UCLA of 49.600 even with an uncharacteristic mistake from Smith, that kept them solidly in the lead (148.300). Arizona kept their spot at second (147.400), Denver remained in third (147.175), and ASU in the rear (146.850).
Morgan started the beam lineup with a 9.875, while
Camie Winger and McCallum built things up with 9.925s. Neff and
Ana Padurariu finished beam on a strong note, scoring season highs of 9.95.
"Beam, I was just so proud of the resilience in our beam lineup," said Dockendorf. "Earlier this year when we had a mistake, we didn't come back nearly as strong as we did today. For Avery, Grace, and Ana to kind of just focus on what their job was, and not let Makenna's routine affect their own performance—I just thought that really showed the strength of these three women sitting here right now."
Utah did what it needed to on floor to seal the deal and take home the Big 12 Trophy posting a 49.450 to keep them well ahead of the rest of the pack.
Glynn started things off with a 9.85. Zirbes, Neff, and Gilstrap added three 9.875s to the mix before Smith posted a 9.925, and McCallum wrapped up the night with a 9.90 to give the Red Rocks the win and the title.
"We just finished up doing what we've been doing all year, throwing a big party with big dance, and big tumbling," said Dockendorf. I'm just overall very proud of the team."
