SALT LAKE CITY — The fourth-ranked Red Rocks will advance to the Regional Finals on Saturday, April 5 at 5 p.m. after tying for first in the Regional Semifinal with Denver 197.650. They will be joined by UCLA and Minnesota who advanced from the earlier Regional Semifinal round.
The Red Rocks wasted no time establishing dominance in their first rotation on floor posting a team total of 49.575 to take first, and four scores of 9.90 or higher. Denver took second with a 49.400, Stanford third with a 49.250, and BYU finished the first rotation in fourth with a 49.150.
"I thought we started off really big on floor," said head coach
Carly Dockendorf. "That was one of our best floor sets we've done this year."
Ashley Glynn got Utah started with a 9.85 and
Ella Zirbes followed up with a 9.875. The Red Rocks then cranked the heat up with
Avery Neff tying her season-high of 9.90.
Jaylene Gilstrap added one more 9.90 before
Makenna Smith and
Grace McCallum wrapped the rotation up with a pair of 9.95s.
Utah kept control of the meet going 49.400 on vault for a 98.975 total score to keep them in first place after rotation two. The Pioneers remained in second with a 98.800, the Cardinal stayed in third with a 98.550, and the Cougars held firm at fourth with a 98.325.
"Vault- we left a little bit of room to improve still for Saturday," said Dockendorf. "To see Avery drop that vault in here, and the highlight for me in the vault rotation was Zoe. She has been working so hard, and her numbers for stick percentage in practice has been going up."
Neff tied her season/career high with a 9.95 in the middle of the lineup, making her the SLC Regional Vault Champion.
Zoe Johnson was equally impressive, posting a new season/career high of 9.925 in the anchor position. Zirbes started the Red Rocks off with a 9.85, McCallum followed with a 9.80, Glynn added a 9.825, and Smith posted one more 9.85.
The Red Rocks didn't let up in the third rotation on bars putting up a 49.500 that gave them a 148.475 advantage over their competition. Denver kept their hold of second place with a 148.125 while BYU jumped up to third with a 147.450, and Stanford fell to fourth with a 147.150.
"I thought we did a really nice job on bars," said Dockendorf. "We left some room with steps on dismount. I am so happy for Grace to finally get her 10. She's earned that, and I'm so glad with two meets left in the Huntsman that she did that this year."
Smith, Glynn, and Zirbes set a steady pace for Utah with three 9.85s while Neff and
Amelie Morgan added a pair of 9.90s. McCallum "wowed" the crowd with her first perfect 10 on bars in the Huntsman Center that also resulted in her being named the SLC Regional Bars Champion.
Despite a strong showing for three events, Utah let up in in the fourth and final rotation on beam (49.175) allowing for the Pioneers to swoop in for the tie.
Morgan got the Red Rocks off to a solid start with a 9.90, Smith added a 9.825 in the middle to keep things going, while
Ana Padurariu wrapped up the night with a 9.80. Neff continued her spectacular night with a 9.90, cementing her first win in the all-around as a Ute, and earning the title of SLC Regional All-Around Co-Champion.
"Our goal today was to qualify to Saturday, and we did that," said Dockendorf. "That was our mission. That was what we needed to do to continue on and make our way to Nationals."
