STANFORD, Calif. –
Haley Denning collected a pair of hits and drove in two runs, but the University of Utah softball team dropped a 5-3 decision to No. 4 Stanford Cardinal on Sunday afternoon in Pac-12 Conference action at Boyd and Jill Family Stadium in Stanford, Calif.
The Utes now own a 2024 record of 17-14 and are 1-8 in the Pac-12. Stanford's mark is 25-5 and they are 6-0 in league play.
For the third straight day, the Utes got the scoring started in the first inning, loading the bases with nobody out on an error, a walk and a single. One run came across on a double play and Denning then put Utah up 2-0 by punching an RBI single through the middle.
The Cardinal had a response, however, using a lead-off homer and a two-run single to move ahead in their half of the first.
After the home side increased its edge to 4-2, Denning pulled the Utes back to within one in the third with another hit to center that tallied pinch-runner
Sianni Sakai. Unfortunately for Utah, Stanford got that run back in the bottom of the fourth to claim a 5-3 advantage.
Pitcher
Sarah Ladd kept the Utes within striking distance by keeping the Cardinal off the board over the final three innings and Utah brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the sixth, but Stanford's NiJaree Canady escaped the jam and closed out a win for the Cardinal with a scoreless seventh.
