SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah softball team erupted for six runs in the fourth inning to erase a 3-0 deficit on their way to 7-4 win over the No. 18 California Golden Bears in game one of a doubleheader before the Utes dropped game two, 1-0, on Friday afternoon in Pac-12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Utah's 2024 record is now 18-15 and they are 2-9 in conference play, while the Bears are 26-9 overall and 4-7 in the Pac-12.
GAME ONE
The Bears broke the ice in the second with a three-run rally that included a pair of sacrifice flies and a run-scoring wild pitch that staked them to the early lead.
It wasn't until the fourth inning that Utah's offense came to life and erased Cal's lead. The Utes loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk, then
Julia Jimenez put the Utes on the board with a two-run single to center. Two batters later, with the bases loaded again,
Reese Lee evened the score by dropping a game-tying single into right. The hit that gave the Utes the lead came off the bat of
Kaylah Nelsen, who smacked a line drive safety into center field, allowing three Utes to come across and putting the home team ahead 6-3.
The Bears got a run back in the fifth inning, but that's all they would get against Utah's
Raci Miranda. The junior hurler entered the game in relief in the fourth and limited the Bears to one run on three hits over 3 2/3 innings. The Utes tacked on an addition run on a
Sophie Jacquez sacrifice fly in the sixth, but Miranda already had all the run support she needed and she closed out game one with a 1-2-3 seventh.
GAME TWO
The second game of the day was a pitcher's duel between Utah's
Mariah Lopez and California's Haylei Archer, both of whom started the contest with three scoreless frames. Lopez stranded runners in scoring position in the second and third, while Archer benefitted from a double play turned behind her in the third.
The Bears plated the game's only run in the fourth, thanks to a lead-off double from Elon Butler and an RBI single off the bat of Lagi Quiroga.
The Utes spent the rest of the evening threatening to tie the score and they put runners in scoring position in each of the last four innings, but Archer prevented them from bringing the tying run around. The game came to an end on a play at the plate, when a pitch got away from Quiroga and
Hailee White tried to score from third, but was tagged out by Archer.
