SALT LAKE CITY –
Sydney Sandez allowed only three hits in six innings and
Karlie Davison and
Ellessa Bonstrom both drove in a pair of runs as the University Utah softball team handed the Oregon State Beavers a 6-1 loss in both teams' 2023 Pac-12 opener, as well as Utah's home opener on Friday evening at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
The Utes are now 17-4 overall, 1-0 in Pac-12 play and they've won eight-in-a-row, their longest win streak since they started the 2017 season with 11 straight wins. OSU falls to 9-12 and 0-1 in league play.
"Great start to conference play for us," said head coach
Amy Hogue. "I was happy with the way we adjusted to the pitching changes they made. That was a big positive for our offense today. Syd was fantastic. She started strong and honestly didn't make many mistakes the entire day."
The work of both pitchers was the story early on, as Sandez spent three innings swapping zeroes with OSU's Tarni Stepto and neither lineup could get a runner past second until the fourth.
In that fourth inning, it was the Utes who broke through with the help of a couple OSU miscues. After a lead-off walk and an out, an error on a fielder's choice put two on and when a
Kaylah Nelsen flyball was dropped in right field, Bonstrom scored to break the scoreless draw. Three batters later with the bases juiced, Davison sent a single through the middle that plated a pair and Utah could claim a 3-0 edge.
One inning later, the Utes needed no such help in doubling their lead and bunt singles from
Haley Denning and
Aliya Belarde set the table for the rally. Both players quickly pulled off a double steal and jogged home when Bonstrom lined a two-run double into left-center.
Julia Jimenez added one more with a single to center which sent Bonstrom in to make the score 6-0.
The Beavers got on the board courtesy of a Madyson Clark home run to lead-off the sixth, but Clark was the only player to reach successfully over Sandez's last three innings. Sandez did not issue a single walk and also struck out four while improving to 9-1, a win total that surpasses her mark in that statistic for the entire 2022 season.
Due to inclement weather, the game was called before the seventh inning could completed.
