It was the first loss in a nine-inning game for Utah this season

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Utah loaded the bases in the eighth inning but was unable to capitalize and the Utes fell, 2-1, on Sunday to CSU Bakersfield in the series finale at Hardt Field.

Jayden Kiernan and Alex Baeza each contributed a pair of hits for Utah (8-2-1), including a double for Baeza, and TJ Clarkson clubbed his third home run of the season. The shot extended Clarkson's hitting streak to seven straight games.

All three of Clarkson's dingers have come this week: in addition to Sunday, Clarkson homered in Friday night's series opener as well as Tuesday at UNLV.

Starting pitcher Cam Day (0-1) had his longest start of the season, going 5.1 innings and scattering four hits and as many walks with four strikeouts in his outing.

Clarkson broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning, sending the first pitch over the right field fence and past the outstretched glove of the leaping Roadrunners right fielder.

That 1-0 lead remained until the bottom of the sixth when a two-out double for CSUB rolled to the wall and plated both runs for the home ballclub. Utah had runners in scoring position in the seventh inning and loaded the bases in the eighth, but the latter opportunity was foiled by a double play ball.

The Utes conclude their road trip on Tuesday, March 8, traveling up Highway 99 to Fresno State for a 7:05 p.m. MT game.
