Bats Come Alive in Softball’s 12-4 Win at Weber State

Mariah Lopez and Sydney Sandez combined to hold the Wildcats to four runs, spread out over four different innings to limit the Weber State threat.
Utah improves to 17-18 with the win, while Weber State is now 19-13. Sandez (8-4) earned the win in relief.
The Utes jumped on top early, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Madi Jacobus drove in Haley Denning for the first run on a fielder's choice after Denning led off with a single and stole second before advancing to third on a Bonstrom fielder's choice. With two outs, Morris stepped up and drove a single into left field that scored Jacobus and Bonstrom to stake Utah to a 3-0 lead.
Weber State clawed back with a run in each of the first and second innings to cut the lead to 3-2, but Utah erupted for six runs in the fourth to take a 9-2 lead, and added three more in the top of the sixth to take a 12-4 lead. Morris had two hits in the six-run fourth inning, including a leadoff double and a two-run single as the Utes batted around. Bonstrom's two-run home run in the sixth provided the final runs.

STANDOUT STAT
Utah's 12 runs were the most it has scored since tallying 14 in back-to-back games on Feb. 20, against California Baptist and UNLV.

"We played a very solid defensive game. We picked up our pitchers by making some good plays and were able to get out of a couple of tough situations early in the game. I'm happy about the push from our team the entire game. We kept putting pressure on them which produced the runs we needed. Lots of aggressive base running and timely hits made it a good day for us."
