SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Softball suffered a loss in the second game of its series with Oregon this afternoon, 9-4.
BreOnna Castaneda doubled twice and drove in a pair, while Alyssa Barrera also plated a pair of runs and Hailey Hilburn scored two times.
Oregon opened the game with three straight doubles for a 2-0 lead but Utah quickly got one back as Julia Noskin started with a single, stole second and scored on Barrera's two-out hit to right.
In the third, Allee Bunker singled, Shaye Bowden bunted and Rachel Cid's liner caromed off the third base bag to bring in another run.
Utah was able to pull even in the fourth. Ellessa Bonstrom doubled and Barrera singled to put the Utes within one. After advancing on the throw, Barrera scored on Castaneda's double to tie the game, 3-3.
Bunker smoked a double to start the fifth and was able to beat the throw to third on a fielder's choice, resulting in runners on the corners with one out. Cid smashed a double to center that put the Ducks back in front, 5-3. Bunker and Cid combined to go 7-for-8 this afternoon with four doubles, three runs scored and four driven in.
Oregon loaded the bases in the sixth thanks to a pair of walks and a fielder's choice but Sydney Sandez was able to get a fly to Ryley Ball in left to keep it a two-run game.
In the bottom half, Hilburn singled and advanced on a wild pitch and passed ball. Castaneda crushed a double to center to claw Utah back within a run at 5-4.
The Ducks threatened again in the seventh, loading the bases with singles and Lexi Wagner made Utah pay with a two-run single. An error added another before Annalisa Williamson tacked on the ninth run with a single.
Jordan Dail, who has pitched every inning so far for Oregon and thrown 245 pitches, picked up the win, her 18th of the season. Sandez had a career-high five strikeouts despite suffering the loss.
Utah and Oregon conclude their series tomorrow at 1 p.m. It will also be Senior Day for three Ute student-athletes who will be recognized after the game's conclusion.
