PHOENIX – Utah Softball swept its doubleheader today to close the Lopes Up Classic at Grand Canyon University. The Utes beat Northern Colorado, 7-0, and then earned a 5-1 win over South Dakota.
Ally Dickman went 7-for-11 this weekend and
Ellessa Bonstrom, buoyed by a four-hit effort in today's second game, went 7-for-12 and reached base nine times.
Katie Faulk homered three times this weekend and Utah pitchers allowed just one earned run over 14 innings pitched today.
Utah 7, Northern Colorado 0
Alyssa Barrera hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high five runs as Utah won its opener on Saturday morning.
Katie Faulk and
Ally Dickman also homered while four pitchers combined to shutout the Bears on four hits.
Jess Lynch notched her first collegiate win for the Utes allowing just one hit over 2 1/3 innings as they recorded their second shutout of the season.
Neither team could muster any offense until the third inning.
Julia Noskin and
BreOnna Castaneda collected infield hits with two outs to create some anticipation. Bonstrom grounded to third but Castaneda was able to beat the force attempt at second to prolong the inning. Barrera followed with her slam to open up a 4-0 lead.
Noskin and Bonstrom singled again in the fifth and Barrera lifted a sacrifice fly to left for another run
The following inning, Dickman homered and two batters later, Faulk left the yard for the final score.
Utah 5, South Dakota 1
Utah started strongly as Noskin reached base and moved up on a Castaneda bunt. Bonstrom smacked her first hit of the game, a single to left, for the opening run.
South Dakota opened with a double and single off
Chantelle Ladner and a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Fernandez tied the game. Despite the opening jitters, Ladner, making her second start of the day, settled down and held the Coyotes in check before exiting.
Dickman delivered another hit to begin the second before Faulk hit her third homer of the weekend for a 3-1 lead.
In the third, Bonstrom and
Makayla Hurst singled before
Alyssa Palacios sliced one inside the bag at third for a run-scoring single.
Utah got some insurance in the seventh when Castaneda reached base for a 10
th straight game. Another Bonstrom single put two runners on and a wild pitch and throwing error brought home BreOnna for the game's final run.
Lynch would earn her second win of the day with 2 1/3 scoreless inning of relief.
Sydney Sandez came on to register the save with three innings of work and just one hit allowed.
