SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Softball smoked Southern Utah in five innings this evening, 9-0. The Utes hit three homers to back a shutout performance by a pair of pitchers.
Miranda Viramontes earned the win, allowing just one hit in three innings while striking out four, and
Katie Donovan retired all six batters she faced, whiffing three of them.Â
At the plate,
Heather Bowen smacked a pair of homers, giving her a team-high seven bombs this season.
Alyssa Palacios also went deep, her first homer as a Ute.
Chandler Walter capped the scoring with a two-run double in the fourth.
Utah started the game with three-straight infield singles as
Julia Noskin,
BreOnna Castaneda and
Alyssa Barrera all reached via small ball. Bowen came through with the big blast to give her side an early 4-0 lead.Â
Bowen homered again to begin the third, smacking one off the camera platform in dead center. After a
Kelly Martinez single, Palacios cracked her first collegiate homer for a 7-0 edge.
In the fourth, Palacios was drilled in the back with one out and
Hailey Hilburn battled back to earn a walk. Walter wailed one down the left field line and it rolled up against the wall for a two-run double.
Utah has the weekend off from Pac-12 play and returns to action on Monday with a doubleheader against Weber State, starting at 4 p.m.
