Utah takes lead to final inning before Bruin bats do damage
The Utes dropped the opener despite a solid offensive performance, keyed by Kelly Martinez. The sophomore catcher was 3-for-3 with a triple and two singles, scoring twice and driving in a run.
Some sloppy play hurt Utah in the first as after a pair of bunt singles, a throwing error scored a pair for UCLA.
Martinez hit a three-bagger to center with one down in the second and Alyssa Palacios followed with a ground ball up the middle that was bobbled, allowing a run to score.
Kelly was at it again in the fourth, singling with one out and tying the score on a Palacios double. The freshman first baseman came around when Hailey Hilburn placed a perfect ball on the right field line and raced around for a RBI triple. She would score on the next play after a well executed bunt single by Abby Robertson.
UCLA answered in the fifth as Kinsley Washington led off with a double and scored on a passed ball. Kylee Perez followed with a deep drive to right that tied the score, 4-4.
In the sixth, Utah regained the lead when Heather Bowen crushed a double off the left-field wall to start the frame. Martinez followed with a go-ahead single for a 5-4 lead.
The wheels fell off in the seventh as the first five Bruin batters reached and Paige Halstead capped the frame with a two-run triple for the final score.
Utah is back in action against No. 3 UCLA at the same time tomorrow, 6 p.m. You can catch the game live on the Pac-12 Networks.
