LIHUE, Hawaii – The Utah men's golf team carded a 1-under par (287) in the second round of play on Friday to currently sit in seventh place heading into the final round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate.
The Utes have a two-day score of 4-under par (285-287=572) at the Wailua Golf Course in Lihue, Hawaii. UNLV (-21) continues to lead the 20-team field, while Texas A&M (-15) trails in second place. Arizona (-10) sits in third place, North Carolina (-9) follows in fourth place, BYU (-6) is in fifth place, and Virginia (-5) is in sixth place to sit just ahead of the Utes.
"We played okay today," said head coach
Garrett Clegg. "It certainly could have been better but it also could have been worse. Jordan had a great day and was just rock solid. He didn't have any bogeys and played great golf. Tristan and Blake did alright today, but Nate and Peyton didn't have their best days. Hopefully we can have a good day tomorrow and are able to catch a few teams in the standings."
Utah was led by
Jordan Costello after the sophomore posted a second-round score of 5-under par (67) to move into a tie for fourth place with a combined score of 6-under par (71-67=138). Costello's second-round mark of 67 is the lowest round of his career. Costello's previous best was 68 most recently at the PING Cougar Classic in April of 2017 during his freshman campaign.
Freshman
Tristan Mandur carded even par (72) in the second round to post a two-day score of 1-under par (71-72=143) to sit in a tie for 26
th place. Fellow freshman
Blake Tomlinson recorded 1-under par (71) to have a combined score of even par (73-71=144). Tomlinson heads into Saturday's final round in a tie for 33
rd place.
Junior
Nathan Wunderli carded 5-over par (77) to sit in a tie for 52
nd with a two-day score of 3-over par (70-77=147). Sophomore
Peyton Hastings finished the second round with a score of 8-over par (80) to have a combined 12-over par (76-80=156) to be in a tie for 106
th.
