CHENEY, Wash. – In its second game in the last three days, the Utah women's basketball team put up 95 points on the road, defeating Eastern Washington 95-51 on Wednesday night. The Utes improved to 5-0 on the season.
It was a balanced, team win in Cheney with all 10 players scoring points. Utah was 38-of-60 from the floor to shoot 63-percent on the game with 25 of Utah's 38 made baskets coming off assists.
With a strong offense, the Utes were also able to control the game on defense, forcing 19 turnovers while scoring 29 points off turnovers. The Utes were led in scoring by
Megan Huff and
Dre'Una Edwards, who both scored 19 points with Huff adding 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
"I thought it was a good bounce back game," head coach
Lynne Roberts said. "We won on Monday, but we didn't play well on either side of the ball. So, I really wanted us to play better and we talked about creating shots for one another instead of creating shots for ourselves and I thought we did that. We had 25 assists on 38 made field goals and we shot a high percentage because we were taking good shots."
Daneesha Provo chipped in 14 points, shooting incredibly efficiently from the floor while going 7-for-9 from the floor.
Erika Bean rounded out Utah's double-digit scorers with a season-high 14 points, adding seven rebounds and six assists.
"I thought everybody contributed and everybody did a good job," Roberts said. "I thought our effort was great. It wasn't a perfect performance, but on the road to score 95 points and bounce back like that with so many young players playing, I am proud of that."
Roberts has been stressing the need of a good start and the Utes did just that, holding a 16-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Utah's big lead was due to smothering defense, scoring 20 points off turnovers, finishing the quarter with eight steals and a 29-13 lead.
Utah kept the pressure coming in the second quarter, holding Eastern Washington to just 10 points and 22-percent shooting. The Utes shot 69-percent from the floor in the second quarter and outscored the Eagles 11-5 in the final three minutes to take a 51-23 lead on a buzzer beating three from Bean.
The Utes continued to shoot well in the third quarter with
Niyah Becker scoring five of her seven points in the quarter. Utah was also 3-of-6 from the three in the third with both Becker and Bean hitting key three pointers to give the Utes a 33-point lead heading into the fourth.
Sarah Porter scored six of her nine points in the final quarter of the game, finishing the game 3-for-3 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the arc. Utah handled the Eagles in the fourth, shooting 75-percent on the way to its 44-point win.
Utah returns to action on Monday, Nov. 26 when they host Seattle U in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The game is set for a 7 p.m. MT tip and will be streamed on UtahUtes.com.
