SALT LAKE CITY -Â No. 15 Utah Softball slammed its way to a 12-2 win over No. 21 Cal this afternoon behind the strength of four home runs.
Â
Kelly Martinez slugged a pair of dingers, including her second game-ending grand slam of the season, while
Alyssa Barrera and
Hannah Flippen also left the yard. The four home runs were the most hit by Utah in game this season and biggest output since knocking six out of the park vs. Southern Utah in 2012.
Â
Utah had hit just two round-trippers in conference play this season entering today's contest. This performance also matched a program mark in Pac-12 play as the Utes sent four out of the yard vs. Arizona State (5/6/12).
Â
The day started with Barrera hitting her second of the season to right-center. After a walk to Flippen,
Anissa Urtez collected the first of three hits with a RBI double to center.
Â
After Cal got on the board in the top of the third via a Jazmyn Jackson RBI triple, Utah responded via the long ball. Barrera reached due to a Cal  error and Flippen crushed a ball to dead center for her seventh of the year.
Â
Cal created another chance in the fourth and Taurie Pogue singled through the left side of the infield to plate another run and pull the Golden Bears within two.
Â
For the second-straight inning, Utah was able to answer as Martinez hit her first homer of the day over left-field fence.
Â
Just like the skies prior to the game, Utah poured it on during the fifth. Flippen and Urtez singled before Cal's right fielder could not handle a
Heather Bowen fly ball. With the bases loaded,
Bridget Castro smacked a two-run single up the middle for an 8-2 edge.
Â
Kay Kay Fronda was plunked and an illegal pitch brought in
Aubrey Peterson. Then after a walk to
Hailey Hilburn, Martinez closed the contest with a towering slam to center.
Â
Miranda Viramontes went the full five innings, allowing just one earned run and improving to 10-1 for Utah. Cal used four pitchers, with two of them recording just one out.
