CORVALLIS, Ore. - Despite a late rally to take the lead in the eighth inning, the Utah baseball team fell to No. 1 Oregon State, 5-4, on Friday evening to open a three-game series against the Beavers.
Oregon State led 3-0 through four innings before the Utes got on the board in the fifth. Utah added a run in the seventh before taking the lead in the eighth after a walk and two hits led to a pair of runs. The Beavers tied the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth and scored the game winner in the bottom of the ninth.
Utah's
Jayson Rose was more than a match on the mound for Oregon State's pitching staff, who came into the game leading the nation with a 1.73 ERA. Rose allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with one walk, striking out eight over seven innings pitched.
Dominic Foscalina went 3-for-4 at the plate.
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., had two hits and two RBI while
Josh Rose also had two RBI.
Ellis Kelly also had a pair of hits.
Utah scored a pair of runs off of OSU starter Luke Heimlich, who came into the game allowing just three total runs in 52 innings pitched this season. Reliever Jake Mulholland had not given up an earned run in 22 1/3 innings coming into the game.
Dylan Drachler, who entered in the eighth, earned the loss on the mound for the Utes.
Utah struggled with errors, making four on the night which led to two unearned runs. Both teams had 10 hits.
Oregon State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. A leadoff double and a walk led to two runs scoring on a throwing error on a fly ball. The Beavers took a 3-0 lead after a run in the fourth inning. A leadoff infield single and throwing error put a runner on base with the run scoring on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Utah got on the board in the fifth.
Josh Rose walked with one out and Kelly and Keirsey, both followed with singles to score Rose. The Utes cut the lead to a run in the seventh. Kelly doubled down the right field line with two outs and Keirsey followed with his second RBI hit of the game for the Utes to put the score at 3-2.
Utah took a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning.
Hunter Simmons walked with one out and
Zack Moeller doubled down the left field line.
Josh Rose singled in both runners to give the Utes the lead.
Oregon State tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth. A leadoff single put a runner on and after a fly out and diving play on a line drive by
Dallas Carroll, back-to-back singles led to a run for the Beavers to tie the game.
In the ninth, Utah stranded a runner on base after
Oliver Dunn reached on a throwing error with two outs. Oregon State rallied with two outs for the game-winning run. A batter reached on a throwing error and back-to-back singles lifted OSU to the win.
