Utes remain unbeaten in Pac-12 road games
STANFORD, Calif. – No. 15 Utah Softball completed the sweep of Stanford this afternoon, 6-2. The freshmen stepped forward in the finale as Kelly Martinez had a pair of hits and runs driven in while Alyssa Barrera registered three hits.
"We did what we came to do," head coach Amy Hogue said. "We wanted the sweep and got it. Winning games every single day is a difficult task, especially in this conference. I am proud of our team for being able to fight for three days and earn these victories."
For the third-straight game, Utah scored in the first inning. Delilah Pacheco drew a walk and after a Barrera single and Hannah Flippen sacrifice, the center fielder scored on an Anissa Urtez sac fly.
Stanford took the lead in the second when Kylie Sorenson smacked a two-out, two-run double off Katie Donovan. That would be all the junior allowed in the contest, winning her second game of the series. She went five innings and improved to 13-6 on the season.
Utah responded in the third and blew the game open. Barrera singled again and moved to second on an error. Urtez would tie the score with her second RBI of the game, a single to right. After a Heather Bowen single, Bridget Castro followed with a knock to left to push the Utes ahead, 3-2.
Kay Kay Fronda's second hit of the game brought in Bowen and then Martinez capped it with a two-run single down the left-field line.
Miranda Viramontes pitched a perfect final two frames including striking out the side in the seventh and punctuating the sweep of the Cardinal.
Utah returns home to Dumke Family Softball Stadium next weekend for three games vs. Cal (Fri. – Sun.). It will be Alumni Weekend with Saturday's noon contest serving as the highlight contest of the series.
