STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 15-ranked Utah Utes (21-9, 12-7 Pac-12) fell to the No. 4-ranked Stanford Cardinal (25-3, 18-1) in straight sets (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) Wednesday night at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif.
Utah was held to a .119 hitting percentage on the night, which marks its lowest clip during the 2017 season. Stanford posted a .231 mark in the sweep over the Utes.
Utah opened the match scoring the first four points, but Stanford put together an 8-1 run to take an 8-5 lead. Both teams traded points midway through the frame until the Cardinal went on a 6-1 run to push the lead to 19-13. Utah wasn't able to cut the deficit and dropped the first set 25-19.
The Utes scored the first four points to start the second set and pushed its lead following another 4-0 run to lead 10-3. Despite the lead, Stanford outscored Utah 10-3 to even the match at 13-all. Trailing the Utes 19-18, the Cardinal scored four consecutive points to force a Ute timeout trailing 22-19. Out of the timeout, a kill from
Tawnee Luafalemana followed by a block cut the lead to just 22-21, but Stanford scored three of the final four points to take the set 25-22 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Utah and Stanford traded points for the majority of the third set. Tied 10-10, the Cardinal scored three straight points to lead 13-10, but the Utes would eventually tie the set 18-18 following back-to-back kills from Luafalemana and
Adora Anae. At 18-all, Stanford scored three consecutive points to force Utah into its first timeout trailing 21-18. Out of the timeout, the Cardinal scored another two points to complete its 5-0 run and lead 23-18. Two Anae kills and a service ace cut the lead to just three, but Utah would drop the set 25-21 and fall in straight sets to Stanford.
Setter
Bailey Choy registered 22 assists on the evening. During the match, Choy netted her 2,000
th career assist to become just the eighth Utah player to eclipse the 2,000-assist mark.
Anae led the Utes offensively after posting 12 kills, while Luafalemana tallied 10 kills on a .600 hitting percentage. Anae also totaled nine digs for Utah and Luafalemana recorded three total blocks.
Two Utes hit double-digit digs on the night with
Brianna Doehrmann tallying 13 digs and
Kenzie Koerber recording 11 digs. Koerber also led the team with six total blocks.
Utah closes out the regular season Friday night when the Utes take on Pac-12 foe, Colorado. First serve for the Utes and Buffaloes is set for 8 p.m. MT at the Coors Events Center in Boulder, Colo.
