Utah Volleyball Sets Records in Win Over Wyoming

Utes start 2026 with 4 straight sweeps, log most aces in three sets in program history
SALT LAKE CITY– Utah Volleyball set two program records in its sweep of Wyoming (25-15, 25-14, 25-23) continuing the positive momentum started from last weekend.
For the first time in program history the Utes started a season with four straight sweeps (Utah Valley, Utah Tech, Oregon State, Wyoming) marking a new era with a new attitude.
"This is a testament to the work they have put in the offseason," head coach Alyssa D'Errico said. "I think we had pretty high expectations in the offseason and told them it was going to be the toughest offseason most of them have ever been through. They crushed it in the weight room, crushed it in the summer, and took care of business in the preseason. It is a product of all the work they have put in."
Additionally, the Utes set a record for aces in three sets during the rally era going from seven to eight.
"We knew serving was an area we could get more aggressive in and take some risks in," D'Errico said. "You saw Loryn Helgesen rip a hybrid and saw some others that have different types of serves they are working on that I think throughout the year we will be able to see. I think it can be a resounding strength of this team to be elite in the serve-pass category."
SET ONE
Utah got off to a quick start over Wyoming thanks to Princess Atamah who got her hands on a block and then followed up with a kill to go up 2-0. The Utes kept the pressure on the Cowgirls going up 6-2 via a block from Isabella Mogridge.
Atamah stayed hot through the first set, recording her fourth to put the Utes up 14-9 midway through. Mogridge also continued finding points for Utah, adding an ace to her stat sheet, and giving the Utes a 17-10 advantage.
Katelynn Field earned the second ace of the set to put the Utes up 23-13 before Devyn Wiest got the set point kill, setting Utah up for the 25-15 win from Ashley West.
SET TWO
Loryn Helgesen wasted no time putting extra pepper on the ball for the first kill of set two and followed up with Utah's second kill for a 2-2 early score.
Wyoming kept things interesting through the mid-part of the set, forcing seven ties and four lead changes to give them the lead, 8-7.
Utah went on a 6-0 run started by Helgesen and aided by Wiest and Field to go up 15-11. The Utes kept the run going out of the media timeout with two Helgesen kills and a Kamryn Gibadlo ace to take a 19-11 lead before the Cowgirls took a timeout.
Freshman Suttyn Harris got Utah to set point and finished the deal for the 25-14 set two win. In total, Utah went on a 13-0 run to end the set.
SET THREE
The Utes kept the pressure high to start the third set with an 8-4 advantage over the Cowgirls.
Wyoming got within two of Utah near the midway point, 12-10, but a service error, followed by a Sierra Grizzle service ace gave the Utes a 15-10 lead.
The Cowgirls clawed their way back into the set, getting within two of the Utes, 18-16, until DyBorrah Johnson slapped a kill to go up 19-16. Wyoming stayed persistent, making it a 19-18 game before tying it up at 19.
Wyoming jumped ahead, 21-20, down the stretch, but Atamah had an answer to tie the game again at 21. The Utes went up 23-22 before a timeout and reached set point off a Johnson block. A West kill sealed the deal for Utah, 25-23.
Utah finished the night with a record for aces (8) in three sets during the rally era and notched for the first time in program history its fourth straight sweep to open a season.
STANDOUT STATS
Utah comes back to the Huntsman Center to host Long Beach State in the second day of the Utah Classic on Saturday, Sep. 5 at 7 p.m. MT.
