SALT LAKE CITY- The Utah track and field team heads to Washington to compete in the UW Invitational. The two-day meet will be held this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27-28, at the Dempsey Indoor Track in Seattle, Wash.
Â
"It is our first of three trips to Seattle and we will see if we can get a good start up there. We will get some freshman their first dose of the Dempsey track and get them used to how things operate up there," head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "The sprinters and jumpers have the weekend off and they will train this week and get themselves ready to get back to Boise in two weeks."
Â
Utah will send 9 distance and middle-distance runners to the meet this weekend. The Dempsey indoor facility is a 307-meter track with a six-lane straightaway and a five-lane oval.
Â
"We'll get them on the big purple oval up there. It is 307 meters of indoor track which they enjoy greatly, especially the 3K and 5K kids. They enjoy less laps and less turns," Kepler stated.
Â
Junior
Shaylen Crook will open the meet for Utah, competing in the 5000-meter run on Friday beginning at 8 p.m, while the rest of the races featuring Utah runners will take place on Saturday.
Â
Sophomore
Caitlin Faust will compete in the 800-meter run. The mile run will feature freshmen
Poppy Tank and
Amanda Gehrich, and sophomore
Sadie Wassum. Senior
Becky Sarmiento, and juniors
Grayson Murphy,
Hannah McInturff, and
Jessica Sams will compete in the 3000-meter run.
Â
Utah will also compete in the 4x400 relay with a team consisting of Faust, Gehrich, McInturff, and Wassum.
