PULLMAN, Wash. - The Utah baseball team pulled ahead in the fifth inning and didn't look back as the Utes defeated Washington State, 11-5 on Sunday evening.
DaShawn Keirsey's two-RBI single in the fifth inning broke a 4-4 tie and gave Utah a 6-4 lead. Although WSU scored a run in the sixth to pull back within a run, Utah added insurance runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to pull ahead for the win.
Dallas Carroll and Hunter Simmons each went 3-for-4 on the day at the plate. Cody Scaggari drove in three runs on two hits while Keirsey drove in two runs and also had two hits.
Dalton Carroll threw five innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits with three walks and a strikeout to pick up his fifth win of the year. Riley Ottesen picked up his second save of the year after throwing the final 3 2/3 innings, striking out six. He did not allow a hit. Trenton Stoltz also pitched.
The Utes took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning after four-straight one-out singles. Scaggari and Dallas Carroll each singled to put two on and led to a Kellen Marruffo RBI single. Simmons singled to load the bases for Josh Rose, who sent in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Washington State came back in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2, as Dalton Carroll surrendered his first home run this year, a two-run shot to right center.
Utah took a 3-2 lead with a run in the top of the second. AJ Young and Keirsey singled with Scaggari driving in a run on a sacrifice fly.
The Cougars pulled ahead in the third, 4-3, after back-to-back walk with the bases loaded.
The Utes scored three runs in the fifth to re-take the lead. Simmons hit a one-out single and Josh Rose walked with Simmons moving to third after an error. Max Schuman's ground out tied the game at 4-4. Young and Kody Davis walked to load the bases for Keirsey, whose single to center field drove in two runs and gave Utah a 6-4 lead.
Washington State got a run back in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff single and a walk would lead to a run scoring on a wild pitch to cut the lead to one, before Utah came right back in the top of the seventh to push its advantage back up to two, 7-5. Schuman led off the inning with a double and pinch runner Andre Jackson scored on a ground out.
Dallas Carroll hit his sixth home run of the year in the eighth inning to give Utah a three-run advantage, 8-5. The Utes added three runs in the ninth with three-straight walks loading the bases for Scaggari, who drove in two runs with an RBI single. Another run scored on a wild pitch to put the lead at 11-5.
Utah and Washington State play the rubber match on Monday, May 9, at 7:00 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
