SALT LAKE CITY -- A seven-run seventh inning lifted the Utah baseball team to a 12-8 win over Washington on Saturday afternoon, giving the Utes a share of the Pac-12 Championship.
The Utes go for the outright championship and a berth in the NCAA regional at noon on Sunday. Use the coupon above for free admission.
It is the first Pac-12 Championship in a men's sport at Utah and the third title overall since joining the league in 2011-12. Gymnastics has won two Pac-12 titles on the women's side.
The game featured four lead changes and the Utes trailed 8-5 before the seven-run seventh inning that featured bases-loaded RBI hits from AJ Young and DaShawn Keirsey, Jr.
Keirsey went 3-for-4, including a two-run inside-the-park home run. Hunter Simmons was 3-for-5 with two RBI while Cody Scaggari went 3-for-5 with an RBI. AJ Young drove in two runs and Josh Rose also homered for the Utes.
Dalton Carroll started on the mound, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts. Riley Ottesen surrendered a run in the fifth while Hunter Rodriguez, who earned the win, pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing one run on four hits with a strikeout. Dylan Drachler pitched the final two innings with two strikeouts and did not allow a hit.
Down 8-5, Kody Davis was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh. After a fly out, Scaggari doubled to left field to score Davis. Dallas Carroll was hit by a pitch and after a strikeout, Hunter Simmons and Andre Jackson hit back-to-back RBI singles, tying the game at 8-8. A walk to Josh Rose re-loaded the bases for Young, who drove in two runs with a single to give the Utes the lead. Another walk, this time to Davis, re-loaded the bases for Keirsey, who hit a well-placed RBI double to add a pair of insurance runs and give the Utes a four-run lead, as the Utes brought on Drachler to close it out.
Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. Washington scored a run in both the third and fourth innings before Utah took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Josh Rose hit a solo home run with one out and Keirsey drove in two runs with his inside the park shot to put the Utes ahead 5-4.
Washington came back in the fifth inning with three runs on three hits to re-take the lead and added a run in the seventh on three hits before the Utes rallied in the bottom of the inning.
