BERKELEY, Calif. - The Utah baseball team dropped game two of its three-game series against California, 9-2 on Sunday evening.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning before California took the lead for good with a three-run third and continued to pull away as the game went on.

Utah was led at the plate by Zack Moeller and Kellen Marruffo, who both went 2-for-4 on the night. Dallas Carroll and Josh Rose each drove in runs.

Dalton Carroll threw five innings in the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts. He falls to 5-7 on the year. Josh Tedeschi pitched in the sixth inning while Nolan Stouder threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

With the loss, the Utes (22-26, 16-10) maintain a half-game lead in the Pac-12 standings over Washington.

Utah took a quick 1-0 lead after DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. doubled to lead off the game. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Carroll. Cal quickly came back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 1-1 after two singles and two walks, with a bases-loaded walk sending in a run to tie the game.

California pulled ahead to a 4-1 lead with a three-run second inning after three hits and a walk.

The Utes got a run back in the third. Marruffo hit a one-out double and scored on a well-placed infield single from Rose. However, Cal increased its lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the inning with two runs following a pair of doubles and a hit batter.

The Golden Bears continued to pull ahead in the sixth with a two-run home run and added a solo homer in the eighth inning.

The Utes put two runners on in the fifth with one out before a double play got Cal out of the inning. Utah also stranded two runners on in the seventh with one out after Moeller and Kody Davis both singled but a pair of fly outs ended the rally.
