SALT LAKE CITY -- In front of a crowd of 5,440, the Utah baseball team defeated in-state rival BYU, 8-1, on Tuesday evening.
Utah pulled ahead slowly, scoring runs in the first, second, fourth, sixth for a 5-1 lead and added three runs in the seventh to break the game open.
Utah was led at the plate by Max Schuman, who was 3-for-4 with a double. Kyle Hoffman went 2-for-4 with two doubles, Kellen Marruffo also had two doubles, Zack Moeller went 2-for-3 and scored twice and DaShawn Keirsey drove in two runs. Hoffman had several key defensive plays at short in the win for the Utes.
On the mound, Nolan Stouder got his first win of the year after throwing six innings, allowing nine hits and one run with one strikeout and a walk. Hunter Rodriguez allowed one hit over two innings and Andre Jackson closed things out in the ninth.
The Utes took quick 2-0 lead after scoring in both the first and second innings. Dallas Carroll walked and scored all the way from first on an RBI double from Marruffo in the first inning. In the second inning, Schuman led off with a double down the left field line that landed just fair. A bunt single from Wade Gulden after the BYU fielder slipped was followed by Moeller being hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a strikeout, Keirsey hit a sacrifice fly to give Utah a 2-0 lead.
Keirsey was key to two runs scoring in the fourth inning. Moeller singled with one out and scored when Keirsey doubled to left field. An error on the play put Keirsey at third and on ball four of Carroll's walk, a heads-up play on a wild pitch would bring Keirsey home and give Utah a 4-0 lead.
BYU loaded the bases with one out in the second but a double play got Utah out of the inning and the Cougars stranded two on base in the third after a double and a walk. BYU got on the board in the sixth after putting up three hits to cut the Utah lead to 4-1, and had two on base before Stouder got a ground out to get Utah out of the inning.
The Utes came back in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of a leadoff double from Hoffman which led to a sacrifice fly from Josh Rose to push the score to 5-1.
Utah broke the game open in the seventh, scoring three runs on four hits. Marruffo led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly from Hunter Simmons. Schuman also singled and led to RBI hits from Moeller and Hoffman to put the score at 8-1.
BYU put two on in the ninth inning after a leadoff single and a walk before the Utes got a pop up and ground out to end the game.
Utah, which leads the Pac-12 standings, continues its push for the title this weekend at California beginning on Saturday, May 21.
