SALT LAKE CITY - Cody Scaggari's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh broke a 4-4 tie and lifted the Utah baseball team to a 6-4 victory over UCLA on Friday afternoon in game one of the three-game series.
Utah scored four runs in the second to take an early 4-1 lead although UCLA came back to tie the game with a run in the third and two runs in the top of the seventh. The Utes pulled back ahead with a run in the bottom of the seventh plus an insurance run in the eighth.
Utah's 10 hits came from nine different batters with Scaggari going 2-for-4.
Jayson Rose pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts. He raises his record to 6-4 on the year. Dylan Drachler picked up his sixth save of the year after throwing the final 1 2/3 innings, striking out three. Riley Ottesen also pitched in the eighth inning.
UCLA took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. A leadoff base hit, stolen base and wild pitch led to the Bruins first run of the game.
The Utes took a 4-1 lead in the second inning, taking advantage of a two-out error for a rally. Josh Rose singled and Ellis Kelly reached on a throwing error on a ground ball with Rose coming around to score. AJ Young followed with an RBI double and DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. added an RBI single. Another error on a ground ball sent Keirsey across the plate.
UCLA made the score 4-2 in the third inning after three-straight hits led to a run before a double play got the Utes out of the inning. The Bruins tied the game at 4-4 with two runs in the seventh on three hits and two errors.
Utah rallied to re-take the lead in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 lead. Max Schuman, entering as a pinch hitter, singled up the middle and pinch runner Kody Davis moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a fly out, Scaggari's single to left field plated Davis for the go-ahead run. The Utes added an insurance run in the eighth. Hunter Simmons hit a one-out RBI triple leading to a sacrifice fly for Andre Jackson.
UCLA loaded the bases with one out in the eighth but a big strikeout from Drachler and subsequent ground out got the Utes out of the inning. The Bruins put runners at the corners with one out in the ninth and another strikeout plus a line out to second ended the game. UCLA put runners on base in all but one inning, stranding 13 on throughout the game.
Utah and UCLA continue their series on Saturday, April 30, at noon. Inclement weather is forecasted for the area over the weekend. Any schedule changes will be posted first to twitter at @Utahbaseball.
