SALT LAKE CITY -- A six-run fourth inning lifted the Utah baseball team to a 9-8 victory over UC Riverside on Saturday evening, as the Utes survived a late rally from the Highlanders.
Although UC Riverside took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the second, the Utes rallied back with six runs on five hits in the fourth. Utah also scored runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings. UC Riverside scored seven runs over the final three innings, including four runs in the ninth, in a late comeback attempt.
Utah was led at the plate by Kody Davis, who went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a walk. Hunter Simmons was also 2-for-4.
Utah used four pitchers, as Dalton Carroll picked up the win in the start, throwing seven innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Josh Tedeschi and Andre Jackson each pitched 2/3 of an inning while Dylan Drachler entered in the ninth and threw the final 2/3 of an inning, getting a ground out to end the game.
UC Riverside got on the board first, taking advantage of a passed ball following a leadoff single to score a run.
Utah came back with a vengeance in the fourth inning, scoring six runs on five hits. Cody Scaggari led things off with a single to center to lead off the inning and Dallas Carroll was hit by a pitch to put two on for Kellen Marruffo, whose RBI single tied the game at 1-1. Josh Rose followed with an RBI single to give Utah the lead. Zach Moller, making his return after an injury against Arizona State, walked to load the bases, leading to two-RBI singles by both Davis and Keirsey and put Utah up 6-1.
Utah continued to pull away with runs in the fifth and sixth innings. An RBI single from Hunter Simmons plated a run in the fifth after Dallas Carroll reached on an error. In the sixth, Davis hit a one out single and scored on Keirsey's second RBI single of the game, giving Utah an 8-1 lead.
UCR took advantage of a pair of walks to put its second run of the game on the board in the seventh, leading to an RBI single. The Highlanders added two more runs in the top of the eighth off two hits a hit batter and a walk, cutting the lead to 8-4.
Utah added a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth with Rose scoring all the way from first on a double to the gap in left center off the bat of Davis.
Utah and UC Riverside close out the series on Sunday, April 17, at 2:00 p.m. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
