PROVO, Utah - The Utah baseball team fell to BYU, 14-3, on Tuesday evening. BYU scored nine runs in the third inning en route to the win.
Utah had four hits on the night. Cody Scaggari and Max Schuman each doubled and DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. and Hunter Simmons also each had a hit. Scaggari, Hunter Simmons and Kellen Marruffo each drove in runs.
Utah used six pitchers. Tanner Thomas made the start and allowed five runs on four hits in the loss. Andre Jackson was solid over three innings, allowing one run and two hits with four strikeouts. Lars Lofgren did not allow a hit and had a strikeout after entering in the eighth inning, throwing 1 1/3 innings. Nolan Stouder, Hunter Rodriguez and Josh Tedeschi also pitched for the Utes.
BYU took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning following a leadoff single and RBI triple, along with a sacrifice fly. The Cougars pulled ahead in the third with a nine-run inning, stringing together seven hits in the inning to take an 11-0 lead.
Utah got on the board in the fourth. Keirsey led off the inning beating out an infield single, and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Scaggari. Marruffo added a sacrifice fly to give the Utes a pair of runs, putting the BYU lead at 11-2.
Each team scored a run in the sixth, with Josh Rose leading off the inning being hit by a pitch while an error put Keirsey on base. Marruffo walked to load the bases for Simmons, who hit a single to drive in a run run before Keirsey was thrown out at home to end the inning. A solo home run added to BYU's lead in the bottom of the inning.
BYU continued to add to its lead in the seventh inning, with two runs walking in after loading the bases for a 14-3 advantage.
Utah returns home this weekend for a three-game non-conference series against UC Riverside, beginning Friday, April 15, at 7:00 p.m. MT. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
