Young Homers as Utah Baseball Falls 9-3 to Minnesota

SURPRISE, Ariz. - A two-run home run from AJ Young highlighted Utah baseball's 9-3 loss to Minnesota on Saturday afternoon.
The Utes struggled at the plate most of the game. Hunter Simmons got Utah's first hit of the day in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Utes would have three hits, which included an RBI double off the bat of Kellen Marruffo. Utah also had eight base runners on walks.
Minnesota led 9-0 before a late rally put three runs on the board in the ninth. Cole Taylor led off the inning with a walk. He moved to second on a balk before scoring on a double to left center from Marruffo before Young's two-run shot to left field.
Riley Ottesen made his first career start on the mound, going 3 1/3 innings and allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Joshua Tedeschi also made his first career appearance, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits with a strikeout. Andre Jackson pitched the final three innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Minnesota got on the board in the first inning after a walk and stolen base led to an RBI double. The Gophers added two runs in the third and continued to pull away with a run in the fourth and three runs in the sixth innings before adding two runs in the ninth. The Gophers had 14 hits on the day and took advantage of two Utah errors.
Utah returns to the field on Monday, Feb. 22, for a non-conference game against Oregon State at noon.
