Utah Baseball Falls to Minnesota in Season Opener, 6-1

SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Utah baseball team dropped its season opener, 6-1, to Minnesota on Friday evening.
The Utes struggled on offense with just two hits on the night, recorded by Josh Rose and Dallas Carroll.
On the mound, Jayson Rose pitched six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts. Josh Lapiana made his Utah debut, throwing 1 2/3 innings and surrendering one run and three hits while Trenton Stoltz struck out the only batter he faced in the ninth.
Utah took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Kody Davis was hit by a pitch with one out and stole second before moving to third on a ground out. Carroll hit a screaming line drive back to the pitcher that caromed off his glove for a base hit, allowing Davis to score and put the Utes on the board.
In the bottom of the fourth, the leadoff hitter reached on an error for Minnesota and although Hunter Simmons made a great play at first with one out and a runner on third to save a run, the next batter hit an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. The Gophers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, with a leadoff homer to take the lead and three subsequent singles led to a run for a 3-1 advantage.
Minnesota continued to pull ahead with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-1 lead.
Also making their collegiate debuts was Ellis Kelly at shortstop and DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., in center field.
Utah returns to the field on Saturday, Feb. 20, against Ball State at 6:00 p.m. at Surprise Stadium.
