CORVALLIS, Ore. - Bret Helton pitched strong in a pitcher's duel as the Utah baseball team fell to No. 22 Oregon State, 3-0, to open a three-game series on Friday evening.
Helton, making his first start since March 27, allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and a strikeout facing off against OSU All-American Andrew Moore. He falls to 2-7 with the loss. Hunter Rodriguez struck out two in one inning pitched while Trenton Stoltz threw the final inning with one strikeout.
Biss Larsen went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Utes while Dallas Carroll was 2-for-4. Each team had six hits on the night, and each team made one error.
OSU broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. A leadoff single and an error put runners at the corners with no outs. Although Helton got a strikeout and a line out, a two-RBI double gave the Beavers a 2-0 lead before a strikeout ended the inning. OSU increased its lead to 3-0 in the fifth after a pair of walks led to an RBI single.
The Utes had their best chance to score in the fifth inning. Utah loaded the bases with one out after singles from Wade Gulden, Larsen and Josh Rose before a double play got Oregon State out of the inning. AJ Young and Max Schuman each hit deep fly outs in the sixth inning.
Utah and Oregon State play game two of the series on Saturday, May 9, at 1:30 p.m. PT.
