SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team dropped the first of a three-game series to 13th-ranked USC, 12-7 on Friday evening.
USC held a 6-5 lead before breaking the game open with a five-run sixth inning.
Utah's 13 hits were spread over 12 different players, with every player who had an at-bat recording a hit. Kody Davis went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Utes. AJ Young drove in two runs. Max Schuman hit his fourth home run of the year and Kellen Marruffo also homered for the Utes. Utah out-hit the Trojans, 13-11.
Nolan Stouder pitched four innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts, and falls to 0-4 with the loss. Trenton Stoltz pitched one inning, allowing five runs (four earned) on two hits with three walks. Bret Helton pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three. Hunter Rodriguez allowed one run with two walks over the final two innings.
Utah took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Cody Scaggari hit a one-out single and Dallas Carroll reached on an error to put two runners on. After a double steal, Young singled through the right side to send home a run. Cole Taylor laid down a bunt for a squeeze play to score the Utes second run of the inning.
USC tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second, taking advantage of three walks, a double steal plus an RBI triple. The Trojans increased their lead to 5-2 with a three-run third, which included three hits and a walk, and a run in the fourth off a pair of two-out hits gave USC a 6-3 lead.
After stranding two runners on in the second and third innings, Utah cut the USC lead to one run, 6-5, with a three-run fourth inning. Andre Jackson walked to lead off the inning and Josh Rose hit a double into the right field corner to send in a run. Davis followed with a single to right and Scaggari walked to load the bases, still with no outs on the board. Carroll also walked to send in a run while Davis scored on a fielders choice before USC got the final two outs to end the inning.
USC broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning, using three hits, two walks and an error to take an 11-5 lead. The Trojans added an insurance run in the ninth after a double led to a sacrifice fly.
Schuman and Marruffo capped off Utah's scoring with solo home runs in the ninth.
The Utes and Trojans play game two of the series on Saturday, May 2, at 6:30 p.m. MT. The game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
