SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team opened a three-game series against Washington State with a 10-3 loss on Friday afternoon.

With the game tied at 3-3, Washington State scored five runs in the fifth inning - four of which were unearned due to three Utah errors in the inning - to take the lead and go on to the win.

Utah was led at the plate by Josh Rose, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Wade Gulden was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Nolan Stouder pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing eight runs (four earned) on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Hunter Rodriguez pitched 1 1/3 innings, walking three. Trenton Stoltz pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with a strikeout and a walk. Dustin Hughes also pitched one inning. In total, the Utah pitchers walked nine, while WSU was also helped by four Utah errors.

Utah took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Cole Taylor led off with a single and scored on Gulden's double to left field. Rose hit an RBI single to score Gulden.

A three-run home run in the third inning put Washington State in the lead, 3-2.

Utah came back to tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning. Wyler Smith singled up the middle and Gulden walked leading to an RBI single from Rose.

A series of miscues led to Washington State's five-run fifth inning. A two-RBI double was the result of a fly ball that was caught by the wind, while another fly ball was dropped for two runs and three bases. With the infield in, Utah misplayed a ground ball that led to a run.

WSU added two runs in the eighth inning off four hits.

The Utes and Cougars continue with their three-game series on Saturday, April 25. Saturday's game has been moved up to 1:00 p.m. MT due to impending inclement weather.
