PALO ALTO, Calif. - Utah baseball dropped game two of a three-game series against Stanford, 8-1, on Saturday evening.
Stanford took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and led 5-0 after a four-run second inning.
Max Schuman led Utah at the plate with two hits.
Utah used four pitchers. Dalton Carroll pitched five innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks. He falls to 4-5 with the loss. Dylan Drachler pitched one inning, allowing one hit. Trenton Stoltz also did not allow a hit in one inning pitched. Andre Jackson made his pitching debut, allowing one run on two hits in the eighth inning.
Stanford got on the board in the first inning after a walk and one-out triple led to a run. In the second inning, the Cardinal took advantage of a leadoff single and two walks to score four runs, taking a 5-0 lead.
Utah looked to get on the board in the third after Wyler Smith hit a leadoff double and Josh Rose reached on a throwing error to put two runners on with no outs. Although both runners moved over on a sacrifice, Smith was thrown out at home on a ground ball from Cody Scaggari before a fly ball ended the inning. The Utes would break through in the fourth. AJ Young walked and Schuman singled leading to a run on a ground out and cutting Stanford's lead to 5-1.
Stanford increased its lead in the fourth to 7-1 with two runs after a one-out single and error led to a two-RBI double.
The Utes continued to battle but were unable to push any runners across the plate. Utah left two runners on in the sixth inning after a pair of two-out singles from Schuman and Hunter Simmons, and also stranded two in the seventh following three walks before a double play got Stanford out of the inning. Utah would leave eight runners on throughout the game.
The Cardinal capped off its scoring in the eighth with a solo home run.
