SALT LAKE CITY - Utah baseball was clipped in the ninth inning this evening, falling to Southeastern Louisiana, 3-2. AJ Young had three hits and Kody Davis added a pair to go along with a run scored and batted in.
Nolan Stouder allowed only two runs in six innings of work and struck out six batters. Bret Helton pitched a perfect seventh and Brock Duke got out of a eighth-inning, bases-loaded jam to keep the game tied entering the final frame.
SLU got on the board in the second inning when cleanup hitter Kevin Carr, who had doubled to start the frame, scored on a two-out RBI single from Brett Hoffman
Utah answered in the home half of the third to tie the score. Hunter Simmons led-off with a single to right field. After a sacrifice bunt from Josh Rose moved Simmons up to second, he advanced to third on a wild pitch. Leadoff hitter Davis followed with a single up the middle to even the game, 1-1.
Utah had a chance to take the lead in the fourth when Young doubled with two outs, but he was stranded after Wade Gulden grounded to first.
The Lions regained the lead in the fifth putting together a two-out rally. Jacob Seward singled and then stole second and third before scoring on a single from Daniel Midyett. The Utes knotted things up again in the bottom half when Davis doubled with two outs and Wyler Smith followed with a game-tying single.
In the sixth, Young singled with one out and moved into scoring position after a wild pitch. A grounder to the right side of the infield pushed him over to third but a strikeout squelched the chance.
Josh Rose drew a leadoff walk in the seventh and after a sacrifice bunt from Davis, the Utes had a pair of chances to take the lead. However, a fly out and strikeout ended the threat.
SLU loaded the bases in the eighth inning but Duke entered out of the bullpen and got a three-pitch strikeout before inducing an inning-ending fly out.
Utah had another chance to grab a lead in their half when Young legged out an infield single with two outs. Gulden followed with a chopper over the first baseman to put runners on the corners. After a walk to Simmons, a strikeout kept the game tied.
SLU grabbed the lead in the ninth as Chris Eades singled to start the frame. After a sacrifice bunt moved him up, the Utes got a second out on a liner to right. With two gone, Julian Service doubled in front of a diving Gulden to score the deciding run.
