SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team (3-10, 0-3) fell to the 50th-ranked Arizona Wildcats (11-1, 2-0) 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Coach Mike's Tennis Center.
"This was a very hard-fought match," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "It felt like we started off really well to win the doubles point handily at No. 1 and No. 3, we just didn't keep the momentum going through singles. They battled a little bit harder than us and had a bit more experience than us in critical areas and it made the difference in the match."
With victories at the Nos. 1 and 3 positions, the Utes took an early 1-0 edge over the Wildcats. Elena Najera-Salas and Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa teamed up at the third spot, handily downing Devin Cypyha and Laura Oldham, 8-1. The roles were reversed as Sarah Richter and Jena Cheng then suffered an 8-1 loss to Lauren Marker and Inge Hendrikx at No. 2, but the Utes came back as No. 31 duo Tereza Bekerova and Margo Pletcher secured the doubles point for Utah with a victory over Briar Preston and Shayne Austin (8-3).
The Wildcats came back tough in singles play. With a 6-1, 6-3 upset over No. 97 Preston, Richter capture the Utes' sole singles victory, quickly downing her opponent 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 position.
In the No. 1 match, Marker took the first set 7-5, before No. 53 Bekerova claimed a 6-1 victory in set two to even the score. Marker eventually took the third set (6-1) to clinch the point. Similarly, both da Rosa and Najera-Salas fell behind 1-0 in their respective matches but fought back for second-set victories. The Wildcats claimed the third sets in both matches to capture the points.
Arizona remained in control of the match, grabbing wins at Nos. 3 and 5 to earn a 5-2 win over the Utes.
Utah continues its' home stand with Utah State Wednesday, Mar. 18 at the Eccles Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT.
