SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team (4-10) swept singles competition as it took down Utah State 6-1 Wednesday at the Eccles Tennis Center.
"It was a good win for us over a very good Utah State team," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "I was not happy with our performance in doubles, but I felt like we rebounded and played some great singles. To win one through four in singles as easy as we did really says a lot about the level of play of our ladies. I'm excited about that and hopefully we can use this as momentum going into the weekend."
In doubles play, No. 31 Margo Pletcher and Tereza Bekerova tallied the first victory of the evening, topping Lexi Turley and Kallie Sperry 6-2 at No. 1. The Aggies quickly retaliated as McKenzie Davis and Maggie O'Meara took the second match from Sarah Richter and Jena Cheng, 6-1. In the remaining doubles contest, Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa and Elena Najera-Salas took a 5-3 edge, before eventually surrendering the match to Nini Guensler and Sabrina Demerath, 7-5, to give the Aggies the point.
Heading into singles, No. 53 Bekerova easily evened the match at 1-1 as she downed Davis 6-2, 6-1 at the first position. Da Rosa, Cheng and Richter continued the winning trend as the Utes handily took the top four matches. Da Rosa defeated Turley 6-1, 6-2, while Cheng bested Sperry 6-4, 6-1. Richter padded the Utah lead to 3-1 as she took down Guensler 6-2, 6-1.
Pletcher battled at No. 5 to earn a 7-6 first-set victory and used the momentum top Demerath 6-1 in the second set to win the point and clinch the match for the Utes. Although the contest was decided, the sixth match continued as Alexia Petrovic fought to a 6-1, 6-7, 10-4 victory over Meghan Lyall.
The Utes are back in action Friday at Coach Mike's Tennis Center and will take on No. 60 Oregon at 1:30 p.m.
