SALT LAKE CITY - Utah soccer (5-5-3, 2-2-0) dropped a difficult 1-0 decision to No. 21 Washington State (10-2-0, 3-1-0) this evening at Ute Field.
"We fought really hard and after some nerves at the beginning of the contest and after the goal, we seemed to settle down and play our game," head coach Rich Manning said. "Everyone knows how important these games are and so I think there's a little pressing going on. We were a little bit unlucky with some chances and some balls that could have been turned in."
Washington State scored with the first foray from either side just eight minutes into the match. Cara Wegner fed Kaitlyn Johnson who was able to loop a header over Lindsey Luke for a 1-0 Cougar lead. Luke had to be quick in goal to react to another Johnson try a few minutes later and another from Jordan Branch off a corner kick.
Taylor Slattery had Utah's first chance in the 21st minute but missed wide. The Utes continued to press with Ali Allen and Natalie Vukic forcing saves from WSU goalkeeper Ella Dederick. She also made a sprawling snare on a Paola van der Veen try that was targeted at the lower left corner.
Baylee Nielsen also rocketed in a shot late in the half, but a WSU defender was able to get the block.
In the second half, Janie Kearl got things going when she forced a save from Dederick in the opening minute. After Slattery fired high, WSU earned a corner kick at the other end and narrowly missed on going ahead by two goals as Jordan Branch hit the crossbar.
Kaycee Buckley had a shot blocked, resulting in a Utah corner, but the Cougar defense did well to clear the area on the hour.
Mikayla Elmer had a chance to pull the Utes even, but once more, Dederick was there to deny the home side with a save.
Luke had one more key stop in the contest, denying Wegner with about 20 minutes to play in regulation, as Utah pushed for the equalizer.
In the 79th minute, Hailey Skolmoski got to the endline and played a ball in to Katie Rogers. The junior midfielder narrowly headed a powerful shot wide of the frame in what was Utah's last solid chance of the contest.
Utah is back in action on Sunday when it hosts No. 19 Washington at 2 p.m. The game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Mountain and Washington Networks. This contest also serves as Utah's Power of Pink match.
