LOS ANGELES - Utah soccer played its final road game of the season on Sunday, falling at UCLA, 1-0.
A bad clearance by the Ute defense in the 67th minute led to a Kodi Lavursky tap-in for the deciding goal.
"We played well in the first half and continued to battle," head coach Rich Manning said. "I'm proud of the team for showing tremendous grit and character in both games. I thought we defended with great intensity, moved the ball around well and created a bunch of opportunities. I'm extremely pleased with the fighting spirit shown by this team."
The first shot of the game did not occur until the 14th minute when Paola van der Veen tested UCLA goalkeeper Siri Ervik.
After MacKenzie Cerda smacked the crossbar on a Bruin try, the rebound was blocked, allowing the Utes to counter. Unfortunately, Taylor Slattery fired high.
A UCLA corner after a half-hour of play resulted in another scoring chance for the home side as Annie Alvarado also hit the crossbar.
Lindsey Luke made her first save of the match when she stopped Zoey Goralski after another Bruin corner in the 41st minute. In the second half, Luke was called into action again, corralling an Amber Munnerlyn rebound.
Munnerlyn became the third Bruin to hit one off the crossbar when she fired a try on goal in the 65th minute. Two minutes later, Lavursky put the Bruins in front.
Luke stopped Cerda in the 71st minute to keep it a one-goal game and create drama in the final minute. Utah earned a corner but Katie Roger's header just sailed over the bar to seal the result.
UCLA finished with a 13-3 shot advantage and a 9-2 edge on corners. Luke finished with three saves while Ervik had one.
"Lindsey had a great game and made two big saves on through balls," Manning added. "This weekend, our back four did a nice job keeping the opponents out of the penalty area."
The Utes have now endured five-consecutive shutout losses for the first time since 2010.
Utah returns home next weekend to play Arizona State on Friday evening. The Utes and Sun Devils kick-off at 7 p.m. MT and the annual Blackout game will be streamed live via UtahUtes.com
