It must have been something about playing a team called the Wolverines, as one day after the football team knocked off Michigan in the Big House, the Utes got goals from Natalie Vukic, Mariah Elmer, Taylor Slattery and Katie Taylor against their in-state foes from Orem.
"We worked hard this weekend and adjusted well in both games this weekend," head coach Rich Manning said. "We tilted the game today at halftime after Natalie made a great play to get us in front. I think the team was frustrated with not playing well during the first half. With the weather the way it was today, we also had to adjust to the downpour in the second half."
Vukic broke the deadlock at the half-hour mark as she was able to chip a try over UVU goalkeeper Jessica Duffin for a 1-0 lead. The chance was created when Duffin's goal kick was fired back into the offensive end by an on-rushing Megan Trabert.
"I thought we played really well and we knew Utah Valley was going to come out aggressively," Vukic said. "Prior to these last two games, our coaches talked with us about how we needed to get the ball in the net. We were able to break through that barrier on Friday and today we got some more."
In the second half, Utah struck on the hour as Mariah Elmer notched her second goal off a nice pass through the middle from her sister, Mikayla. Less than one minute later, Slattery got her first of the season, whipping a shot in from the right side after a lovely set-up by Baylee Nielsen.
"We told the forwards coming into the weekend that they needed to produce goals and we got five from that unit," Manning added. "The group is very talented and they continue to grow as players. We recruited Natalie and Mariah because we had seen them score for four years in high school."
The Utes finished things off in the 69th minute as Taylor scored her team-leading third goal. Off a Utah corner, Cabria Turang got her head to the ball in order to keep the play alive. Taylor found the ball in the scrum and slotted home for a 4-0 lead. For Turang, the assist was her first point as a Ute.
Lindsey Luke made six saves for the contest to notch her sixth shutout this season and 19th of her career. This was the fifth shutout in the last six games for the Utes and they've not allowed a goal during the run of play for over 560 minutes.
"The key for us is that we have 11 players defending at all times," Manning stated. "Combine that with the fact that Lindsey had an absolutely great weekend and we've been pretty solid back there."
Utah opens Pac-12 play next Friday at 3 p.m. vs. No. 4 Stanford at Ute Field. The game will be televised nationally on the Pac-12 Networks.
