TEMPE, Ariz. - The Utah baseball team fell to Arizona State, 7-1, in game two of the three-game series on Saturday evening.
TJ Bennett led Utah at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance.
Zach Adams pitched 5 2/3 innings on the mound, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with six strikeouts. He also walked four. Bret Helton pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
The Utes struggled with timely hitting in the early innings, leaving runners on base in each of the first five innings. Utah took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Konnor Armijo hit a one-out double and Josh Rose walked, followed by an RBI single off the bat of Cory Hunt. Biss Larsen singled to load the bases and a ground out led to a play at home for an out before a fly out ended the inning, leaving three runners stranded.
Arizona State tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run in the fourth inning. The Sun Devils added a run in the fifth for a 2-1 lead, taking advantage of an error to send a run across the plate. ASU increased its lead with two runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh inning.
Utah and ASU close out the three-game series on Sunday, May 18, at 12:30 p.m. PT.
